Facial Care - Location, Location, Location!

For proper facial care, the face and neck area, the eye area, and the lips all require specialized treatment.

How you care for your face can be as important as which skin care products you use.

face and neck skin Facial skin, which includes the neck, is more delicate than the skin of our bodies or hands. Avoid using harsh products such as deodorant soap - look for a cleanser and moisturizer to suit your skin type, and don't forget the most important ingredient of all...water!

Please note: the photo is of naked skin! See facial care tips on how to deal with discoloration, age spots and even out skin tone. For more significant surface scars, pigmented areas or wrinkles, see microdermabrasion.

close up of an eye The eyes are probably the most important area to address in good face care - they are the first thing most people will notice. But, the skin around the eyes is extremely delicate so you don't want to help gravity and time in creating more wrinkles.

Unless the product you are using is specifically formulated for the eyes, keep it away from the entire area - lids, under eye, and lashes included. If you are going to apply eye creams, use your ring finger to dab on.

To test this theory, put your hands on a flat surface and lift each finger in turn. You will notice that you are unable to lift the ring finger as high as the others. This makes it the ideal tool for dabbing around the eye area, since you want as little pulling or force on this thinnest of skin layers!

Special problems of the eyes may include dark circles and puffiness. A little detective work to discover the cause will help in finding the right treatment for these conditions.

closeup of lips As for the lips? When our daughter was a toddler, she got a cut which crossed her lipline. A plastic surgeon was recommended since the two skin types were quite different. Of course, this was after she had been stitched up in the pediatrician's office - but that's another story! Bottom line - you can get away with using lipstick for blush in a pinch, but for the most part, face makeup is for the face and you do well to choose other products specifically designed for the eyes and lips!

So, now that we have identified the three very different areas to address, let's look at each of these areas in depth, along with some great facial care products and tips that will help achieve that "ageless" look!
