Healthy Skin Care is Not a Luxury!
Healthy skin care is not just for looks. As the body's largest organ, your skin has several important jobs to do. One of the most important is serving as a barrier against bacteria and other environmental toxins which can make you ill. This same
barrier helps to keep natural oils in and the skin from drying out.
The cells in the top layers of the skin are packed very closely together, some even overlapping. Deeper in the skin's layers, the dermis is busily producing lipids, a fatty substance, and an oil called sebum, which move up to fill in any gaps between the cells.
As dead skin cells slough off, new cells replace them. Trouble begins if the dead cells are not properly exfoliated and clog up the pores. This blocks the natural oils from providing protection and can lead to infection. Either small cracks form as the skin dries out, allowing bacteria to enter, or excess fluid is allowed to flow out. Either way, the skin not only appears unhealthy, it also ages more quickly and you are at
risk for skin infection.
The good news is that even though a healthy skin care program - the use of lotions, exfoliants, and even massages to improve circulation - may feel like pampering, it is actually promoting good health!
One note of caution as we look at specific treatments for the skin - always test new products on a small patch of skin. This is especially important if you have sensitive skin.
You want to look for products which are labeled hypoallergenic (meaning not likely to cause an allergic reaction) or noncomedogenic (meaning not likely to cause blemishes). Still, just because the label says so, doesn't mean your skin won't have a reaction. You can even develop a reaction to products you have been using for some time, so it's worth it to be sure.
