Deciphering Skin Care Ingredients

laboratory flasks

All skin care ingredients must be listed on the package. Yet this information has little or no value if you do not know what the ingredient list means.

The ingredients are listed on the package in the order of amounts used. Therefore, the first few ingredients represent a greater percent of the overall product. However, some ingredients are more potent than others, and may therefore appear further down the list.

Water is frequently the first ingredient. This is because water is the most common solvent and serves an important function in the cleansing or moisturizing action of the product. It does not mean the product has been "watered down"!

Usually the last to be listed will be colorants and preservatives . This is important in case you have an allergy to certain agents.

It would be impossible to list all ingredients since there are so many. What follows is a grouping of ingredients, according to their function. If an ingredient is not recommended for a particular skin type, the information is in bold type following the entry.
acne ingredients aesthetic antioxidants and amino acids cleansing and toning conditioning emollients exfoliants and discoloration hydroxy acids moisturizer and film former soothing stabilizing and preservatives
